Frontman João Gordo, 62, returned to the Rock in Rio stage following a weight loss journey that began in mid-2023. The transformation, which resulted in a reduction of nearly 40 kg, was the result of a ketogenic diet, regular exercise, and medical support.

Reason for recent attention

News about João Gordo's journey gained prominence following the release of his performance at Rock in Rio, where he shared details about his new health routine.

Weight loss process

According to GQ Brasil, João Gordo began the treatment after realizing that, without changes, he might not live to be 64. He underwent psychological therapy to address his relationship with food, consulted an endocrinologist, and adopted the Pronokal diet, a low-calorie ketogenic regimen using protein-based meal replacements transformed into pancakes, breads, cakes, juices, pasta, and mousses. The doctor also advised reducing alcohol consumption.

Use of Ozempic and results

The artist previously tried Ozempic to treat obesity, but reported that the medication did not work for him. Instead, he focused on diet and physical activity, dedicating an average of 1 hour and 40 minutes per week to movement. He also took up boxing, which helped accelerate his weight loss.

Return to the Rock in Rio stage

On September 6, João Gordo performed on the festival's Supernova stage alongside Asteroides Trio. The show took place under heavy rain and with a reduced audience, but the frontman managed to sing without a break, relying on a teleprompter to read the lyrics. He performed tracks such as “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” and “Juventude Perdida”.

Impact of the lifestyle change

In an interview with VEJA, João Gordo highlighted that weight loss helped him regain his stage energy. He said that although he still cannot climb stairs effortlessly, he is no longer “dying” as he used to. He also commented that the new routine allowed him to finish a 15-show tour in 17 days, something that was previously impossible.

Reflections on health and weight loss

The artist, who has been diabetic since age 10, spoke about the use of weight-loss pens. He stated that for people with diabetes, these pens can be appropriate, but the main focus must be a change in mindset. “You can't stuff yourself with a pen and then go to a steakhouse,” said João Gordo.

Legacy and inspiration

João Gordo also cited the Ramones' album “Blitzkrieg Pop” as a significant influence in his life, marking the transition from a priest-school boy to a “complete lunatic, an outcast.” He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to honor the band at Rock in Rio, celebrating the album's 50th anniversary.
