Bees Build Hive in Space in Seven Days

The STS-41-C mission showed that gravity is not a condition for honeycomb architecture

In April 1984, the STS-41-C mission transported over 3,000 bees to the Challenger's cabin, where, in microgravity, they built hexagonal honeycombs in just seven days. The experiment, chosen by NASA, sought to determine if bees could fly, communicate, and work without the reference of gravity.

Microgravity and the Bees' Initial Reaction

Upon reaching orbit, the worker bees lost their sense of up and down, spinning in disordered circles. The queen remained at the center, protected by the collective instinct that prevented initial dispersion.

Honeycomb Construction in Weightlessness

The wax glands of young worker bees secreted scales which, without gravity, formed irregular spheres and filaments. The bees actively molded the wax with their legs and mandibles, achieving hexagons with angles close to 120 degrees and uniform walls. By the end of the week, 200 square centimeters of honeycomb had been measured.

Communication and Hierarchy Maintained

Even without a vertical reference, the bees continued to dance and exchange pheromones. The queen emitted chemical signals that maintained social cohesion, while the workers took care of cleaning, wax production, and larval development.

Critical Environmental Control

The container had temperature, humidity, and lighting sensors. The temperature was maintained at around 34 °C, humidity was controlled to prevent wax drying and bee dehydration, and lighting simulated day-night alternation, influencing the insects' circadian rhythm.

Scientific Legacy and Implications for Space Biology

The experiment demonstrated that honeycomb architecture is embedded in the collective organism, not dependent on gravity. Decades later, the flight of the 3,301 bees continues to be cited in discussions about space biology and life support systems in weightless environments.
