The tool was designed to explore vast regions of the sky and deepen studies on dark matter, dark energy, and Earth-like exoplanets. Military origin of the hardware
The structure of the Roman was not initially created for space exploration. Following the attacks on New York's Twin Towers in 2001, the US National Reconnaissance Office requested the creation of extremely powerful telescopes for Earth observation. Years later, part of the program was canceled, and the machines were stored and offered to NASA in 2012.
Comparison with other telescopes
Roman is the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. It will form a new triad of observatories capable of observing different details of the universe, offering a panoramic view and high scanning speed that allow studying the cosmos through wide-field surveys.
