The global tech landscape records a significant shift at Apple with Tim Cook exiting the CEO position. After over a decade leading the giant, Cook will be succeeded by John Ternus, head of hardware engineering, starting September 1. The transition marks the end of an era of strong growth and geopolitical challenges under his watch.

Tim Cook's Era at Apple

Cook became CEO in August 2011, shortly before the death of his predecessor, Steve Jobs, who was regarded as one of the world’s greatest innovators. Under Cook’s leadership, Apple reached remarkable milestones, with its stock price soaring more than 2,000%. The company briefly hit a market capitalization of US$5 trillion in July, becoming the second firm to reach that figure. David Yoffie, a Harvard Business School professor, noted that Cook managed to scale the iPhone to a level many would have thought unlikely or impossible.

Product and Service Expansion

Cook was instrumental in taking Apple beyond its early products such as the Mac, iPod, and iPhone. He is credited with making the iPhone essential for daily activities, from buying coffee to paying bills, thanks to the web services and accessories he drove over the past decade. Under his tenure, the company became a major player in entertainment, health, and wearables. Ron Johnson, who oversaw Apple’s retail operations, described Cook as “smart” and “strategic,” someone who “always listened first and spoke when he had something to add.” His expertise in operations and supply‑chain management was crucial to Apple’s success.

Navigating Geopolitical Waters

Cook’s ability to manage political relations was vital for Apple’s operations and its “empire” of iPhones, especially in the United States and China, nations whose ties have been tense. Jeffrey Sonnenfeld of Yale School of Management highlighted that Cook was one of the few leaders who personally called the then‑President Trump. Apple pledged to invest US$600 billion to expand its U.S. operations, including producing critical iPhone components on American soil, a move that helped it avoid steep tariffs. Cook also sought to diversify part of production away from China while maintaining consumer appeal and Chinese leadership support, a feat Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management called a rare accomplishment.

Challenges for the New CEO

John Ternus, Cook’s successor, inherits a series of obstacles. Apple’s reliance on China was exposed by the COVID pandemic and Trump‑era tariffs. Additionally, the company faces a strained relationship with regulators in Europe, its second‑largest market, resulting in changes to how the App Store operates there and blocking the launch of a revamped Siri version. There is also growing pressure for Apple to excel in artificial intelligence (AI), especially after the Vision Pro fell short of expectations. A shortage of memory chips, driven by the AI race, has forced Apple and other firms to raise product prices.

Cook’s Advice for the Future

In one of his final earnings calls as CEO, Tim Cook offered Ternus a piece of advice: focus on creating products that “enrich” customers’ lives. He said in April, “If you keep focusing on that and make your decisions around it, it will produce a great business. And we’ll be able to build more products and do it all over again.” This counsel points to the continuity of a core philosophy at Apple.
