Piracicaba River Hits 4.2 Meters and Enters Emergency State

The Piracicaba River surpassed 4.2 meters this Thursday (10) and entered a state of emergency due to the risk of flooding, according to Civil Defense. The city recorded 78.7 millimeters of rain, exceeding the historical average projected for the entire month of September, which is 60.2 mm.

What changed in the city

City hall is advising residents to avoid areas near the riverbanks. Classes were suspended at some schools, and the Novo Horizonte municipal school reported leaks with water pooling on the floor. In the Novo Horizonte neighborhood, rainwater flooded homes, requiring residents to avoid flood-prone spots.

How the rain developed

Meteorologists forecast that both the probability and volume of rain will decrease on Friday (11). The city will only see isolated showers, with sunny spells alongside morning showers, according to the Climatempo forecast. The minimum temperature will be 18 °C and the maximum 30 °C, with a thermal sensation around 23 °C.

Measures taken by Civil Defense

When the river level exceeds four meters in depth, the risk of overflow increases. In response, Civil Defense intensified monitoring and mobilized teams to implement preventive measures. The neighboring Capivari city hall requested that the company Raízen fully open the floodgates of the Leopoldina Dam to facilitate water drainage.

What to expect for the weekend

As the rains subside, the river level is expected to fall again, but the population should continue following official advisories and avoid traveling through high-risk areas. If new downpours occur, the risk of overflow remains.
