Heavy Rain and Lightning Strike Rio This Thursday
Civil Defense Issues Alert, Forecast Indicates Up to 50mm of Rainfall
On Thursday morning (10), the capital of Rio de Janeiro was surprised by a Civil Defense alert predicting intense rain, lightning, and winds up to 70 km/h. The phenomenon has led to a high demand for information, as it directly affects the mobility and safety of Rio residents.
Civil Defense Alert and Most Affected Areas
Rio de Janeiro's Civil Defense issued a warning for rain showers, lightning, and strong winds. Between 10:30 AM and 10:45 AM, storms were recorded in neighborhoods such as Laranjeiras, Tijuca, Urca, and Santa Teresa. Water volumes could reach 50 mm, and there are already reports of five fallen trees and water pooling on roads in the South Zone, Downtown, North Zone, and Ilha do Governador.
Temperature and Humidity Forecast
According to Climatempo, the capital's minimum temperature will be 19 °C in the early hours, rising to 30 °C during the warmest parts of the day. The heat index is expected to be around 26 °C. Relative humidity will remain high, ranging between 75% and 97%.
Rain Intensity and Flood Risk
The probability of rain is estimated at 91%, with a total predicted volume of about 25 mm. Although this is less than the maximum limit of 50 mm indicated by the Civil Defense, the showers may concentrate over short periods, increasing the risk of flooding on main roads and reducing visibility for drivers and pedestrians.
Safety Recommendations
Municipal authorities advise against crossing flooded areas, avoiding the banks of streams and rivers, and doubling attention while driving, keeping headlights on and reducing speed. In case of a fallen tree or pole, as occurred on Rua Maença in Pechincha, it is necessary to contact Light and the Civil Defense at 199.
What to Expect in the Coming Days
For Friday (11), the Alerta Rio System indicates continued cloudy to partly cloudy skies, with new moderate to occasionally heavy rain showers and the possibility of lightning. Winds will remain between 18.5 km/h and 51.9 km/h. On Saturday (12) and subsequent days, the trend is for overcast skies with light to moderate rain and moderate winds.
