On August 1, 2026, the power outage caused by strong winds in Rio de Janeiro resulted in damage to electronic devices and food. The State Consumer Defense Secretariat (Sedcon) and Procon-RJ began guiding consumers on how to request compensation.

How to file a compensation request

The consumer must submit the request directly to the utility company responsible for electricity supply, indicating the approximate date and time of the interruption. It is necessary to identify the damaged equipment, providing brand, model and usage time, if possible.

Necessary documentation

To prove the damage, the consumer must keep service protocols, invoices, technical reports, quotes and any other documents that attest to the loss. It is not allowed to discard or repair the device before the utility’s analysis, unless authorized or a proven necessity.

Deadlines for analysis and response

According to ANEEL regulations, the utility has up to one business day to verify appliances that preserve perishable foods or medicines, such as refrigerators and freezers, and up to 10 days for other equipment. The result must be communicated to the consumer within 15 days if the request is made within the first 90 days after the damage, or within 30 days in other cases.

Deadline to request compensation

The consumer has up to five years to file the compensation claim. When the request is approved, the indemnity – through repair, replacement or payment – must be carried out within 20 days.

Guidance from Procon and Sedcon

Sedcon and Procon-RJ emphasize that, when facing difficulties to exercise their rights, consumers can turn to the official service channels of the agencies to register complaints and receive guidance on the appropriate procedures.
