Paraná on Alert: Storms, Strong Winds and Hail Hit the State

Paraná is facing a period of intense weather instability, which has led to the issuance of meteorological alerts and thunderstorms across various regions. Since the weekend, storms with heavy rain, strong winds and hail have caused damage and raised concerns, putting the issue in the spotlight.

Alerts and municipalities affected by the instability

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a yellow storm alert for 316 municipalities in Paraná. The forecast includes intense rain, winds that can reach up to 60 km/h and the possibility of hail. The State Civil Defense, for its part, issued a red alert for the risk of strong wind, intense rain and hail in several regions. In addition, the entire state of Paraná begins September under a yellow storm alert. Over the weekend, 30 high‑risk (orange) alerts and 15 very high‑risk (red) alerts were issued using cell‑broadcast technology for the Southwest, Central‑South and Pioneer North regions.

The causes of the weather instability

The instability affecting Paraná is caused by a combination of meteorological factors. According to the Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar), the passage of a cold front and the intensification of a low‑pressure system over Paraguay contribute to making the weather highly unstable. Other sources indicate that the heavy rains are caused by a semi‑stationary cold front over Rio Grande do Sul, combined with warm, moist air over southern Brazil, a surface low‑pressure area and atmospheric disturbances at middle and upper levels. These conditions favor widespread rain, lightning and strong winds.

Impacts and incidents recorded in the state

The capital, Curitiba, recorded winds of 80.64 km/h at the Pinheirinho station and a rainfall total of 32.4 mm in the Caximba neighborhood. The storm caused at least 12 incidents in the city, including four tree falls in the Barreirinha, Pilarzinho and Campo de Santana neighborhoods, and three floods affecting Pilarzinho, Tatuquara and Portão. Five tarpaulin deliveries were made to families affected in São Braz, Centro, CIC, Boa Vista and Jardim Social. A serious incident involved a tree falling on a motorcycle on Theodoro Makiolka Street, injuring the rider and passenger, who were taken to the Cajuru University Hospital. In Pinhão and Marmeleiro, hail damaged the roofs of more than 600 houses. Wind gusts above 60 km/h were recorded in Assis Chateaubriand (69.8 km/h), Cerro Azul (61.6 km/h) and Nova Prata do Iguaçu (63 km/h).

Weather forecast for the coming days

Simepar forecasts that rain should persist throughout Tuesday (the 1st), with a lull on Wednesday (the 2nd). However, the storm is expected to return between Thursday (the 3rd) and Friday (the 4th). On Tuesday, rain should become more concentrated over the northern band, the Campos Gerais region and the East, with a tendency for improving conditions in the West, Central and South of Paraná, where sun will already appear in the afternoon. Cold returns to the state between Tuesday and Wednesday, with a chance of light frost in the far south. Maximum temperatures are not expected to rise much, staying below 20 °C in the Central‑South, Southeast and East, around 20 °C in the West and Southwest, and above 25 °C in the North and Northwest.
