Orange alert in SC: thunderstorms, winds up to 100 km/h

On Thursday morning (13th) the state of Santa Catarina entered an orange alert due to unstable weather conditions, with the risk of thunderstorms, hail and winds that can reach 100 km/h. The measure was taken jointly by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) and the Santa Catarina Civil Defense.

Inmet classified the risk as orange for the entire territory, indicating the possibility of intense rain between 30 and 60 mm/h, winds of 60 to 100 km/h and hail occurrence. The warning covers the full period of the 13th, from 00:00 to 23:59.

Forecast for Thursday (13)

According to Civil Defense, the instabilities will strengthen still in the morning in the West and will spread throughout the state. In all regions there is a probability of lightning, wind gusts, heavy rain and hail. Minimum temperatures will range between 10°C and 14°C on the Southern Plateau and between 13°C and 19°C in the other areas, while maximum temperatures will rise up to 28°C in the Greater West.

Risks identified by Civil Defense

The agency classified the risk from moderate to high for damages such as roof stripping, falling branches and trees, power outages and flooding. There is also an alert for possible isolated flash floods, especially in areas more vulnerable to heavy rain.

Forecast for the coming days

On Wednesday (12) the weather remains unstable, with rain throughout the day, especially in southern Santa Catarina and Greater Florianópolis. The risk stays low to moderate. On Friday (14) intense rain and isolated thunderstorms continue, keeping the risk moderate to high. On Saturday (15) instability persists, with new thunderstorms between the Greater West and the Plateaus, while the coast will have persistent rain due to maritime circulation. On Sunday (16) the weather stabilizes in the Greater West, but remains cloudy and rainy across the Plateaus and the coast.

Recommendations for the population

Civil Defense recommends that residents avoid risk areas, reinforce the securing of objects that could be carried by the wind and stay alert to possible power interruptions. In case of flooding, it is important to seek shelter in elevated locations and follow the guidance of local authorities.
