Yellow alert: heavy rain, temperature drop in Campo Grande

On Saturday morning (5), intense rain left streets and houses flooded in Campo Grande, while a cold front promises to reduce temperatures by up to 5 °C by Monday (7). The combination of phenomena kept the state under a yellow storm alert.

Rain that flooded the capital

The Mato Grosso do Sul Time and Climate Monitoring Center (Cemtec) recorded 71.6 mm of accumulated precipitation in Campo Grande, with 17.2 mm up to 10 a.m. and another 54.4 mm in the afternoon. Neighborhoods such as Santa Emília, Centenário, Los Angeles, Novo Samambaia, Aero Rancho, Jardim Seminário and Coophavila II reported flooding and mud invasion.

Residents sent videos showing streets turned into rivers; on Avenida Gunter Hans, vehicles were submerged up to the doors. The Anhanduizinho Creek registered 54.4 mm in 24 hours, according to Cemaden’s interactive map.

Storm alert and wind forecast

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) kept the storm alert for the whole state until 10:59 p.m. on Sunday (6). The forecast includes rain of 20 to 30 mm per hour, possibly reaching 50 mm in a day, winds between 40 km/h and 60 km/h and the chance of hail.

Cold front and temperature drop

A polar air mass moving through the Central-West is expected to cause a sharp temperature fall. By 11 a.m. on Monday (7), thermometers may show a decrease of up to 5 °C from the projected average, according to Inmet. The mix of cold air, rain and cloudiness could push readings below 10 °C in some areas.

Climatempo indicates that the feeling of cold will be strongest on Sunday, as the polar air reinforces the temperature drop caused by the precipitation.

Outlook for the next days

Despite the forecast of intense cold, the weather is expected to improve throughout Monday, with sunshine and a gradual rise in temperatures. Nevertheless, the population should stay alert to the storm warning, which remains in effect until Sunday.
