A longitudinal study tracking nearly 10,000 older women over ten years has indicated that excessive coffee consumption may have a negative effect on bone density. Research revealed that drinking more than five cups of coffee per day is associated with lower bone density in the hips, a key factor in fracture prevention.

On the other hand, moderate coffee consumption—defined as up to five cups a day—showed no signs of harming bone density. Furthermore, tea consumption was correlated with a slight increase in hip bone density, suggesting that tea may offer some benefits for bone health in older women.

The study analyzed beverage intake as part of a broader set of factors affecting bone health, including diet, physical activity, and medication use. Although the results show an association between excessive coffee and lower bone density, they do not establish direct causality, but rather indicate the need for mindfulness regarding daily coffee intake in vulnerable populations.
