CPTM strike partially halts three train lines
The strike, which began at midnight, affects about one million passengers and causes changes in the capital's traffic.
Workers of the São Paulo Metropolitan Transport Company (CPTM) began a strike at midnight on August 4, 2026, partially interrupting lines 11-Coral, 12-Safira and 13-Jade. The strike affects about one million people.
Impact on train lines
On line 11-Coral, trains do not run between the Palmeiras-Barra Funda and Guaianases stations. On line 12-Safira, the stretch between Brás and Engenheiro Goulart also has reduced service. Line 13-Jade remains completely stopped.
Compliance with the court order
The court ordered employees to maintain 80 % of train capacity in operation, but at the moment this percentage is not being observed.
Alternative transport measures
To mitigate the impact, the São Paulo city hall suspended the car rotation and activated the PAeSE bus system in areas near the affected stations. The metro, in turn, added more trains on lines 1-Blue, 2-Green, 3-Red and 15-Silver.
City congestion
At 7:50 a.m., the Traffic Engineering Company (CET) recorded 412 kilometers of congestion across the city.
Workers' demands
Strikers demand a review of the privatization process completed in July, job guarantees for 4,000 workers, and the cancellation of the privatization, which they consider insufficiently transparent and detrimental to the interests of São Paulo residents.
Government and CPTM stance
In a statement to Agência Brasil, the State Government and CPTM lamented the strike. The communication highlighted the State's commitment to preserving jobs, analyzing bills of interest to the category, and considering issues such as the incorporation of the Campos do Jordão Railway, the inclusion of workers in the State Public Servant Medical Assistance Institute, and health assistance for State public servants.
