CAOA Changan confirmed national production and the launch of the new mid‑size SUV CS55 in Brazil, to be manufactured in Anápolis, Goiás. The model will reach dealerships in September to compete in one of the most contested segments of the country’s automotive market. The news follows the manufacturer’s expansion in the Brazilian market.

What the new mid‑size SUV looks like and its space

The CS55 falls into the mid‑size SUV category, measuring 4.55 m in length, 1.86–1.87 m in width, 1.68 m in height and a wheelbase of 2.65–2.66 m. The trunk holds about 475 litres. Unlike the Uni‑T, the CS55 adopts more traditional shapes and a less sloped roof to optimise interior space. Inside, the model features a raised digital instrument cluster, a prominent central multimedia display on the dash, and soft‑touch surfaces. The equipment list is expected to include a panoramic sunroof, panoramic cameras and a driving‑assist package.

What to expect from the engine and performance of the CS55

Although the manufacturer has not officially disclosed the mechanical kit for Brazil, the expectation is that the model will use the 1.5‑liter turbo‑flex four‑cylinder direct‑injection engine. This powertrain, already used in other brand models, delivers 180 hp and 29.2 kg fm of torque. The likely transmission is a seven‑speed dual‑clutch automatic, front‑wheel drive, equivalent to that of the Uni‑T. In the international market, the model is equipped with a 1.5‑liter Blue Whale gasoline turbo producing 192 hp and 31.6 kg fm of torque.

Plans for hybrid versions in the Brazilian market

Electrification is on the horizon for the brand in Brazil, though no confirmed dates exist for the CS55. Abroad, there is a plug‑in hybrid version that combines a 1.5‑liter gasoline engine with an electric motor, producing 215 hp and an electric range of up to 125 km on the Chinese cycle. Another possibility is the self‑charging hybrid launched in China, equipped with a 1.5‑liter engine and a 1.7 kWh battery. CAOA has signalled a desire to bring electrified models, but the CS55’s sales will start with the flex version.

Estimated price and brand positioning

The new SUV will be positioned between the Tiggo 7 Sport, sold for R$139,990, and the CS75, offered for R$179,990. Accordingly, the CS55’s price is estimated between R$150,000 and R$170,000, though official figures should be revealed at launch. The model is the brand’s third launch since the end of March and is part of a R$5 billion investment plan to make Changan a volume brand in Brazil, where it has already produced 10,000 vehicles in five months.
