After coming in second place in the first round, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reorganized his campaign team and brought in Camilo Santana as the new coordinator. The change aims to strengthen the strategy for the debates that will mark the final confrontation with Flávio Bolsonaro.

Camilo Santana Joins Campaign Coordination

A former Minister of Education and two-term former governor of Ceará, Camilo Santana joined the campaign coordination this week when Lula promoted a reshuffle of the command structure. His recent experience includes serving as the main campaign manager for Elmano de Freitas (PT) in the Ceará dispute, whose first-round victory increased Santana's prestige with Lula and PT leaders.

Objective of the New Second Round Strategy

Camilo stated that his presence, alongside Rafael Fonteles, the re-elected governor of Piauí, aims to strengthen the team and assist in the second-round strategy. According to Lula's interlocutors, Camilo's entry reduced the powers of Edinho, PT president and general campaign coordinator, but there were no changes in positions, only reinforcements.

Participation in Televised Debates

The new coordinator announced that Lula will participate in two debates: on Band, on October 18, and on TV Globo, on October 23. In the first round, none of the main candidates attended the debates, but the strategy changed for the direct confrontation in the second round. During a walk in Ceilândia, Lula had already indicated his presence in the debates.

Confrontational Tone and Criticisms of the Opponent

Camilo brought a more direct confrontational tone with Flávio Bolsonaro, warning that Brazil cannot be transformed "into an Argentina" by adopting the "tesouraço" (massive cut) in public accounts proposed by the opponent. The criticism refers to the spending cuts that, according to Santana, would benefit the rich and harm the poor.

Internal Repercussion and Command Adjustments

In his first public statement as coordinator, Camilo avoided commenting on personnel replacements but emphasized that his role is to support the electoral strategy. The reorganization of the command structure, announced after the first-round defeat, indicates a search for greater cohesion and effectiveness in Lula's second-round campaign.
