The FDA's maximum risk alert regarding Salata Dressings' Jalapeño Avocado dressing gained prominence after the agency confirmed that the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The Class I classification indicates there is a reasonable probability that consumption will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

Recall classified as maximum risk

On September 29, the FDA assigned a Class I classification, its highest alert level, to the recall of Salata Salad Kitchen Jalapeño Avocado dressing. This classification is used when there is a "reasonable probability" that use of or exposure to the product will cause serious adverse health consequences.

Affected products and distribution locations

The recall includes 1,724 units of the dressing, packaged in 12.5 oz (354 ml) bottles and one-gallon containers, all with the same UPC code 8 50043-70646-5. Expiration dates range from July 8 to November 25, 2026. The batches were distributed in the states of Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas.

Probable cause: contaminated jalapeños

Salata Dressings reported that the suspect ingredient is diced jalapeños received from four batches between July 8 and July 29, 2026. The supplier of these jalapeños, Coast Citrus Distributors, had initiated a recall of them on July 22, expanding the action on August 5 after linking the ingredient to a multi-regional Salmonella outbreak investigated by the FDA.

What to do if you have the product

Anyone who has the dressing should stop consuming it immediately. It is recommended to discard the product or return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund. It is also important to wash and sanitize utensils, containers, or surfaces that have come into contact with the dressing. In case of ingestion, observe symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting, and seek medical assistance if they persist or if there are signs of complications.

Salmonella outbreak status

To date, the outbreak associated with the contaminated jalapeños has caused 431 illnesses across 32 states, with 57 hospitalizations. The last recorded case began on August 2. The FDA continues to investigate the source of the contamination and monitor new reports.
