The United Nations (UN) has issued a warning about a forecast of a “very strong” El Niño, projecting its duration until February 2027. The climate phenomenon, already “firmly established,” is expected to intensify its effects over the coming months, according to a statement released today (3) by the Meteorological Organization.

According to the UN notice, El Niño is entering a consolidation phase, with its impacts expected to become considerably more pronounced. The probability that the phenomenon will persist at this “very strong” intensity through early 2027 is described as “near‑100%.” This scenario points to a prolonged period of significant climatic influence.

The Meteorological Organization, which issued the alert, emphasizes the robustness of the forecast. The intensification of El Niño’s effects in the next months is a central point of the communication, signaling the need for continued vigilance. The persistence of the phenomenon, already “firmly established,” through February 2027 at a “very strong” intensity is the main concern raised.

This UN alert, delivered through the Meteorological Organization, underscores the continuity and strengthening of El Niño. The projection that the phenomenon will maintain a “very strong” intensity and an extended duration until February 2027, with high probability, highlights the importance of monitoring its development in global and regional scenarios. The phenomenon is already “firmly established,” and its effects are expected to increase further, reinforcing the relevance of the warning.
