Wave of weather extremes brings stifling heat and frost to the country

Parts of Brazil will have a hot and dry weekend, while others will face cold days with frost, after days of rain and intense winds with the passage of the extratropical cyclone. A cold air mass in the Center-South will drop temperatures in the South and parts of the Southeast and Central-West, while the North, Northeast, and other areas of the Central-West continue with extreme heat.

Forecast of intense cold and frost in the South

In the South region, intense cold conditions will remain throughout the weekend. There is a risk of frost in southeastern Paraná, the central region and highlands of Santa Catarina, and a large part of Rio Grande do Sul. On Saturday, there is an orange danger warning for temperature drops until 10 a.m. in southern Paraná, the highland regions of Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul.

Extreme heat and low humidity in other regions

In the North, Northeast, and Central-West, low humidity combined with high temperatures affects a large part of the regions. Southeastern Amazonas, southern Pará, northern and eastern Mato Grosso, northwestern Goiás, the Federal District, Piauí, and western Bahia continue with extreme heat. In the Amazon, meanwhile, heavy rains occur accompanied by wind gusts.

Conditions in the Southeast and humidity alerts

In the Southeast region, for Saturday, the orange danger warning is for low air humidity in northwestern and northern São Paulo and for a large part of Minas Gerais. The coast of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo should be hit by isolated rain. Rio de Janeiro's Civil Defense also triggered a severe cell phone alert about winds of up to 90 km/h forecast for the afternoon.

Preventive measures against strong winds in Rio

Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere reported that messages were sent and ordered the closure of municipal parks at 12 p.m. as a preventive measure. The municipality entered Stage 2, and the mayor asked residents for serenity, stating that there is no reason to panic. ICMBio reported that, as a safety measure related to the intensification of the winds, all trails in the Tijuca National Park were closed.
