Thaissa, 21, was killed while handing out flyers for a yet-to-open gym

On Friday afternoon (11), a 21-year-old nutrition student was stabbed to death inside a yet-to-open gym in Londrina, in northern Paraná. The crime gained national attention because the victim resisted an attempted rape and ended up murdered by the attacker, who was arrested in flagrante delicto.
Who the victim was
Thaissa Gabriely, a final-year nutrition student at the Centro Universitário Filadélfia, had recently been hired by the gym to promote the new establishment. She was handing out flyers in front of the location when she was approached.
How the assault occurred
According to the Civil Police of Paraná, a 21-year-old man led Thaissa to the gym's parking lot and tried to rape her. When she resisted, the student was stabbed and died at the scene. The suspect, with an injury to his hand, fled and asked bystanders for help, claiming to have been the victim of a mugging.
Authorities' intervention
A team from the Mobile Emergency Medical Service (Samu) and police officers were called to respond to the alleged mugging. Meanwhile, workers arriving at the gym found bloodstains and alerted the authorities. The teams located Thaissa's body inside the establishment and confronted the suspect, who confessed to the homicide.
Arrests and investigation
The man was arrested in flagrante delicto for completed qualified homicide and attempted rape. The Civil Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crime. So far, the suspect's name has not been released.
Repercussion and tributes
The victim's educational institution published a statement of condolence, and the family demanded justice and protective measures for women. Thaissa will be buried on Saturday afternoon in Londrina. The case has reignited the debate on violence against women in Paraná.
