Race for São Paulo Senate Seats Gains Prominence
Four candidates face off in a race defined by withdrawals and twists
The race for two São Paulo Senate seats is heating up after Ricardo Salles (Novo) withdrew less than a week before the vote. The dispute brings together four names who position themselves against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Governor Tarcísio de Freitas.
Who are the Candidates
On the government opposition side are former minister Marina Silva (Rede) and former minister Simone Tebet (PSB). On the governor's side, the ticket includes André do Prado, president of the Legislative Assembly (PL), and former Public Security Secretary and federal deputy Guilherme Derrite (PP).
Poll Results
According to the Atlas/Estadão poll released on September 3, Derrite leads with 25.9% of valid votes, followed by André do Prado with 24.2%. Tebet and Marina registered, respectively, 22.2% and 21.5%.
Context of the Race
The race occurs amidst a crisis in the Supreme Federal Court, whose impeachment processes and trial of magistrates depend on the Senate. The main candidates advocate for opening investigations into the ministers and propose changes such as a minimum age, fixed terms, and a new nomination method.
Ticket Formation
Tarcísio de Freitas chose André do Prado and Guilherme Derrite to form his ticket after rendering former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) ineligible. Lula's ticket required adjustments, such as Simone Tebet's change of domicile from Mato Grosso do Sul to São Paulo and Márcio França's withdrawal from the Senate race in favor of Marina Silva.
Voting Expectations
Experts point out that voters typically decide their vote on the eve of the election, increasing the unpredictability of the final result.
