Christ the Redeemer lit orange to alert against femicide

On August 4, 2026, the Christ the Redeemer monument was lit orange, a color used worldwide to raise awareness about violence against women. The action is part of the second phase of the Judiciary Campaign to End Femicide, which celebrates two decades of the Maria da Penha Law.

The initiative is organized by the Executive Committee of the XVIII National Forum of Judges on Domestic and Family Violence against Women (Fonavid) and by the State Coordination of Women in Situations of Domestic and Family Violence (Coem), linked to the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice. The campaign uses simple language to disseminate factors that fuel femicide, aiming to raise public awareness about signs that may precede the crime.

Ongoing femicide cases

In the state judiciary, 7,383 cases involving completed or attempted femicide have been filed between January and July of this year. These numbers demonstrate the magnitude of the problem and the need for preventive and punitive measures.

Assessment by the Coem coordinator

The state coordinator of Women in Situations of Domestic and Family Violence, Judge Adriana Ramos de Mello, emphasizes that the 20 years of the Maria da Penha Law constitute a decisive milestone in building a more just and equitable society, committed to protecting the fundamental rights of girls and women. "The Maria da Penha Law represents a watershed in the lives of all of us, especially the girls and women of our Brazil. It truly stems from the courage of that woman who refused to accept the violence she endured. The law represents the result of a long journey of Brazilian women," she said.
