Extratropical Cyclone Brings Strong Winds and Storms to Rio Grande do Sul
Low-Pressure System Triggers Warnings for Wind, Hail, and Flood Risk
An extratropical cyclone is developing between early morning and morning this Tuesday (29), bringing strong winds, intense rain, and hail to Rio Grande do Sul. The combination of low pressure and a cold front generates warnings for flood risk and material damage.
Cyclone Formation and Wind Forecast
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) indicates that the system could generate wind gusts of up to 100 km/h, especially in the areas of Fronteira Oeste, Campanha, Missões, Noroeste, and Norte. The orange alert, which indicates danger, forecasts winds of up to 100 km/h accompanied by rainfall volumes between 30 and 100 millimeters.
Hail and Intense Rainfall Alert
In addition to the winds, Inmet points to the possibility of large hail in the same regions. The State Civil Defense updates Hydrometeorological Warning 18/2026, maintaining the risk of hail and winds that may exceed 90 km/h. Precipitation could surpass 120 mm in some areas of Oeste, Centro, and Missões, with accumulated totals between 80 and 150 mm over 24 hours.
River Flood Risk
The rainfall volumes increase the threat of flooding in the Ibirapuitã, São Sepé, Jacuí, Taquari, and Caí rivers. The hydrological situation is between alert and normal thresholds, with particular attention to the Jacuí river and its tributaries, which already show levels above the flood alert limit.
Impacts on Gaúcho Cities
Municipalities such as Caçapava do Sul, Rio Pardo, Eldorado do Sul, Charqueadas, Alvorada, and Rosário do Sul are expected to record the highest rainfall volumes. The Civil Defense warns of floods, flash floods, and overflowing streams, especially in the Oeste, Centro, Leste, and Norte areas of the state.
Outlook for the Coming Days
As the cyclone moves away, the weather is expected to improve starting Wednesday (30). There may still be rain in the Norte, Litoral Norte, and Metropolitan Region, but the rest of the state will experience more stable conditions, with predominant sunshine and pleasant temperatures. On the first day of October (1st), the weather will be stable throughout the state, although the polar air mass maintains the possibility of isolated precipitation in the far north of Rio Grande do Sul.
