On August 10, 2026, CAF – the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean – announced a donation of US$500,000 to meet the humanitarian needs generated by the earthquake that struck central Colombia on Monday. The quake was felt strongly in several regions of the country, as well as in Panama and Venezuela.

CAF Donation to Colombia

The institution said the US$500,000 will be used to support humanitarian assistance needs arising from the emergency, covering immediate expenses and backing relief programmes.

Allocation of Funds

The resources will be channeled through CAF's Social and Human Development Funds, instruments already used for long‑term projects in the region, now mobilised to respond to the crisis. The aim is to support the assistance actions needed after the earthquake.

Reaction of Sergio Díaz-Granados

Sergio Díaz-Granados, CAF's executive president, expressed solidarity with the families affected and stated that the organization is at the disposal of the Colombian government to support reconstruction and recovery efforts. “Desde CAF queremos enviar nuestro afeto y nuestro cariño a todas las familias afectadas. Al mismo tiempo, nos ponemos a disposición del Gobierno para acompañar los esfuerzos de reconstrucción y recuperación de las zonas afectadas”, he said, also praising the role of local authorities.

CAF's Commitment to Emergencies

The bank emphasized that the donation is part of its commitment to support member countries in the face of disasters, mobilising resources to protect affected populations and later contributing to recovery processes, a recurring practice in emergency situations.

Coordination with Colombian Authorities

CAF highlighted the importance of coordination among institutions and the leadership role of Colombian authorities in addressing the emergency, stressing that joint efforts are essential to accelerate the recovery of the affected areas.
