The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo has issued a high-risk alert for wildfires in the state's interior. The threat is driven by a combination of high temperatures, low relative humidity levels, and the action of a pre-frontal system.

Fire risk in the interior

The Civil Defense warning is mainly aimed at the regions of Presidente Prudente, Araçatuba, São José do Rio Preto, Marília, Bauru, and Sorocaba. This scenario favors soil drying and increases the risk of flames spreading in areas of dry vegetation, undergrowth, and pastures.

The dry weather conditions require extra attention in rural areas. The Civil Defense reminds the public that starting vegetation fires is an environmental crime and advises people not to use fire to clear land or pastures, as well as to avoid discarding cigarette butts in vegetated areas or along highways.

Arrival of cold front and strong winds

Between Thursday night and Friday, a cold front will hit the state of São Paulo, causing temperatures to drop in the state's interior. Winds could exceed 75 km/h between Friday and Sunday in cities such as Bauru, Marília, Presidente Prudente, and Sorocaba.

Wind gusts increase the risk of fallen trees, damaged roofs, power outages, and damage to more vulnerable structures, in addition to impacts on urban mobility and port operations.

Temperature forecast and hot days

The coming days will also be hot and sunny in São Paulo, with dry air dropping humidity levels to unhealthy thresholds. Maximum temperatures will reach 31°C, with air humidity around 30%, maintaining atmospheric stability with no forecast of rain in the days leading up to the cold front.

Health care and recommendations

With low air humidity levels, self-care must be redoubled, especially for children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems. Recommendations include:

  • Staying hydrated throughout the day
  • Avoiding physical activities during the hottest hours of the day
  • Humidifying indoor environments whenever possible
