Tourist Fined Nearly R$8,000 for Jumping into Iguaçu Falls

The incident occurred on the morning of June 6, when a tourist attempted to retrieve a cell phone that had fallen into Iguaçu Falls. He bypassed the guardrail of the walkway leading to the Devil's Throat viewpoint and jumped into an area near the waterfalls. After retrieving the device, he had difficulty returning to the designated visitor area.

Fines Applied by ICMBio

The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) identified the visitor through images from the park's concessionaire and issued an infraction notice based on Article 90 of Decree No. 6,514/2008. The penalty was R$7,800. As of the latest publication, there is no information regarding payment or the filing of an appeal.

Intervention by Civilian Firefighters

Civilian firefighters, who monitor the trails and the walkway leading to the Devil's Throat, intervened in the incident. They accompanied the visitor until the end of the tour and subsequently escorted him out of the park. The park emphasizes that it is forbidden to cross, climb, or sit on guardrails, including for taking photos or retrieving objects.

Guidance for Safe Retrieval

The park advises that if any object falls into the river or onto the slopes, visitors should contact the fire department team. These professionals assess whether the retrieval can be done safely, protecting both tourists and the unit's natural heritage.

Visitation and Protection Rules

According to ICMBio, visitation rules are in place to protect visitors, professionals involved in rescues, and the park's natural heritage. Non-compliance with restrictions may result in liability.
