Sony Launches PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Exclusive to Japan
The new version of the digital console arrives in November with an unprecedented color and a competitive pricing strategy.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a new version of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, in Midnight Black, for the Japanese market. The launch, scheduled for November 19, has generated great interest and placed the console among the most searched topics, especially as it coincides with the arrival of a highly anticipated open-world title.
A New Edition Exclusive to Japan
The new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black was officially revealed by Sony, adding a darker color option to the PlayStation lineup. However, the console is exclusive to Japan, requiring a Japanese PlayStation Network account for the region and supporting only Japanese language settings. In terms of hardware, it is a standard PS5 Digital Edition with an 825GB SSD, with no performance improvements or other technical enhancements. The main attraction, therefore, is the new look.
The console will be launched on November 19 for 55,000 yen, equivalent to approximately 310 euros or 347 dollars.
Pricing Strategy and Competition
Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed this new edition as part of a strong Christmas offensive in the Japanese market. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black arrives cheaper than the Nintendo Switch 2 models, which currently cost the equivalent of 339 euros. Nintendo of Japan will launch the Nintendo Switch 2 Choose-Your-Game Bundle on November 12 for 359 euros, which will allow users to acquire the console with one of three games: Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, or Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.
The launch date of the new PS5, November 19, is noteworthy for coinciding with the release of GTA 6, a highly anticipated open-world game.
Accessory for Those Who Prefer Discs
For players who still appreciate the physical format, Sony will make a physical disc drive in the same color, Midnight Black, available from the same day, November 19. The accessory will cost 11,980 yen, equivalent to approximately 68 euros or 76 dollars. With the purchase of the disc drive, the total price for users who want physical game functionality will be 378 euros.
The Future of Physical Games
The announcement of the new PS5 Digital Edition reiterates Sony's transition to exclusively digital releases, a move that may not please all fans. The company reminds that the physical format will end in January 2028 for games released after that date. The Japanese PlayStation website includes the following statement:
New PlayStation games released from January 2028 onwards will be available exclusively as digital downloads on the PlayStation Store and from participating retailers. Physical games released before January 2028 will continue to be playable.User Reception
The Midnight Black design of the new PS5 has received praise in online discussions. Users expressed a desire for corresponding faceplates to be released for the PS5 Pro, while others argued that the console should have been available in black from the start. The Japan-exclusive launch and price have sparked debates about regional differences. Some participants point to the depreciation of the yen and lower purchasing power in Japan, while others argue that converting the price directly to US dollars doesn't tell the whole story. The absence of an integrated disc drive in the digital model was also a point of discussion, although Sony is releasing a corresponding black disc drive as a separate accessory.
