M7.4 earthquake in Chocó triggers closure of Colombian airports

On the morning of August 10, 2026, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake was recorded in Chocó at 7:34 a.m. The Civil Aviation Authority reported that the seismic event caused disruptions to several airport facilities across the country, requiring immediate inspections.

M7.4 quake hits Chocó

The regulatory agency highlighted that the epicenter was located in Chocó, at a depth of 96 kilometers. The quake caused visible damage to terminals and circulation areas, leading to the evacuation of passengers at some airports, such as the Matecaña International Airport in Pereira.

Airports with suspended flights

Commercial air operations were halted at the airports of Pereira, Manizales, Armenia, Cartago and Buenaventura. In each of these locations, only medical or state aviation flights remain authorized. The Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport in Cali also had its activities suspended as a preventive measure.

Civil Aviation Authority response

From the outset, Aerocivil deployed its aeronautical firefighters, search and rescue (SAR) teams, and maintained continuous monitoring of airport infrastructure. Regional directorates were convened to assess possible structural damage and mitigate subsequent risks.

In Popayán, operational restrictions remain in effect due to emissions from the Puracé volcano, regardless of the quake's damage. The Civil Aviation Authority emphasized that its priority is to ensure the safety of passengers, crews, and all air system agents, and that new information will be released as soon as air traffic is restored.
