Shakira brings $1 million to Chocó to rebuild a university and 10 schools

Singer Shakira arrived in Quibdó, the capital of Chocó, in western Colombia, to visit areas and schools destroyed by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck the country on August 10, 2026. Alongside philanthropist Howard Buffett, son of billionaire Warren Buffett, the artist announced a $1 million donation for the reconstruction of educational institutions affected by the disaster.

A university and ten new schools

Shakira announced that she will rebuild the Technological University of Chocó, damaged by the quake, and that, in partnership with Howard Buffett, she will promote the construction of ten new schools in the department. According to the singer, more than 30 schools collapsed completely in Chocó and more than 200 educational institutions were affected across the country.

Partners add more resources

In addition to the artist's contribution, Live Nation and the organization Global Citizen announced additional contributions of $500,000 each, increasing the amount earmarked for rebuilding the schools. Shakira also made an appeal for international aid for Chocó, one of Colombia's poorest departments.

During her visit to Quibdó, Shakira said she would devote her personal efforts to the cause and asked that the region not be forgotten again once the emergency passes. The visit underscored the mobilization of artists and international organizations around the earthquake's victims.
