The trial of Russell Brand began on Monday, October 12, at Southwark Crown Court in London, following the formal opening of the case on Wednesday, October 14. The case has attracted attention because the actor and comedian, former husband of singer Katy Perry, faces seven charges of sexual crimes committed between 1999 and 2009.

Charges presented by the prosecution

Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones described Brand as a "relentless, calculating and manipulative sexual predator." The charges include three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one of sexual harassment, all involving six women.

Details of the alleged crimes

Among the alleged incidents, the rape of a woman in a hotel room during the Labour Party Conference in 1999, an attempt to drag another into an MTV Europe cubicle in 2001, and a forced sexual act in a bar restroom in 2004 stand out. There are also allegations of sexual assault in a media office and forced anal sex in 2009.

Russell Brand's defense

Brand appeared at court accompanied by his wife Laura Gallacher and pleaded complete innocence. In written statements to the police, he said he does not remember the incidents, denied any non‑consensual acts and acknowledged only sex in bathroom cubicles during parties.

Trial development

The proceedings may last up to ten weeks. The prosecution emphasized that, although some allegations were made by women who resisted and others who had no opportunity to react, this did not alter the conduct attributed to Brand.

Context of the investigation

The allegations gained traction in 2023 following a joint investigation by British newspapers and Channel 4’s Dispatches programme. In April 2025, Brand was formally charged with crimes against four women; two additional allegations were later added, bringing the total to the six victims cited.
