Rural Credit Decline and Alternatives for Producers
Disbursements decline, default rates rise, and Banco do Nordeste offers renegotiation
In the first three months of Plano Safra, disbursements through traditional rural credit lines fell by almost 30% compared to the same period of the previous season, raising concerns among producers already facing high default rates.
Plano Safra Disbursements Register Sharp Decline
Between July and September, the funds released totaled R$ 80 billion, a drop of almost 30% compared to the previous cycle, and the number of contracts fell from 717,000 to 555,000. This reduction directly impacts the availability of resources for operating costs and investments on properties.
Rural Default Reaches 8.8% in First Quarter
Data from Serasa Experian indicates that rural default reached 8.8% in the first quarter of 2026, a 1.2 percentage point increase compared to the same period in 2025. The indicator considers debts overdue for more than 180 days contracted with agribusiness companies.
Warning for New Credit Contracts
Victor Cardoso, commercial head at fintech Agree, highlights that in a scenario of increased financial pressure, taking on new credit without analyzing existing commitments can jeopardize future cash flow. He recommends consolidating debts, evaluating projected cash generation, and observing the concentration of maturities before seeking new resources.
Debt Renegotiation with Banco do Nordeste
Provisional Measure 1,376/2026 authorizes the renegotiation of over 117,000 credit operations in states served by Banco do Nordeste. In Sergipe, more than 3,000 producers, responsible for 3,300 operations, can join by November 12. Conditions include a payment term of up to ten years and a grace period of one year for the start of principal payment.
Practical Tips for Producers
Before contracting new credit, producers should:
- Map all existing financial obligations;
- Identify concentrated maturity periods;
- Verify if terms are compatible with expected revenue generation;
- Consider alternatives such as consortiums or insurance, which can reduce the need for immediate resources.
