CNH extension in MS: what changes for drivers

Drivers in Mato Grosso do Sul whose National Driver's License (CNH) was expiring between June 5 and December 8, 2026, have received a new deadline of December 9, 2026. The measure was published in Deliberation No. 278 of the National Traffic Council (Contran) and aims to adapt the Detran systems to the new CNH Law.

Extension of CNH validity in MS

The validity of licenses with an original expiration date between June 5 and December 8, 2026, has been automatically extended to December 9, 2026. No application or issuance of a new document is required; the extension occurs automatically.

Drivers' rights during the extension

During the extension period, drivers cannot be fined for driving with an expired license, unless the CNH is suspended or revoked. When stopped at a traffic checkpoint, the driver must present the CNH even with the expired printed date and, if necessary, inform about the deliberation that extended the deadline.

Deadline for renewal and procedures

Drivers have 30 days after the end of the extension, meaning until January 8, 2027, to start the renewal. Updating the license continues to require medical examinations and, when necessary, a psychological evaluation, which must be scheduled through Detran-MS official channels.

Infrastructure challenges in municipalities

Detran-MS warns that 29 municipalities in the state do not have all the accredited professionals for the exams. In 28 municipalities there is a lack of accredited doctors and, in 13 of these, there is also a lack of psychologists. This shortage could make it difficult to complete the exams within the deadline.

Next steps for automatic renewal

The automatic renewal provided for in the new CNH Law is not yet in operation. The responsible agency, Senatran, must define and publish the procedures so that drivers registered in the National Positive Drivers Registry (RNPC) can benefit from it. Meanwhile, the extension guarantees the continuity of driving without the risk of a very serious infraction, which carries a fine of R$ 293.47, seven points on the license, and vehicle impoundment.
