Why Rockstar Considered More Characters in Red Dead Redemption 2
The team feared a single-hero story would tire fans after GTA V's success

Rockstar revealed that, when planning Red Dead Redemption 2, the team was concerned about the reaction of players who had grown accustomed to GTA V's multiple protagonist system.
Rockstar's Concern About Monotony
Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, said that after GTA V, “we were a little nervous that people would get bored with just one protagonist.” The experience of switching between three characters in GTA V was very well-received, which raised doubts about keeping a single hero in RDR2.
The Idea of Multiple Protagonists
In an interview with the TroisCouleurs website, Nelson recalled that questions arose such as “Will it be possible to switch between gang members?” He stated that these questions were asked by the team, but upon reflection, he realized that “people love to speculate.”
Why Arthur Ended Up Being Enough
Nelson acknowledges that, in the end, “Arthur worked very well as a character” and that the game managed to “deeply reveal his journey.” The honor system, which links player choices to Arthur's development, was highlighted as an element that maintained players' interest.
Influence on Future Productions
The lessons learned from RDR2 influenced Rockstar's approach to GTA VI. Nelson explained that the team wants to “bring that depth and emotional connection” to the new title, now considering “a duo, a Bonnie and Clyde-type couple.” This choice was described as “obvious” and the “clear decision” for the next project.
What Fans Can Expect
With GTA VI scheduled for release on November 19 on next-gen consoles, the expectation is that the multiple protagonist experience will return, but now in a partnership format. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to be remembered as an example of how a single protagonist can generate engagement when well-developed.
