The Civil Police are trying to arrest two delivery workers identified as participants in the lynching of cyclist Cláudio Rafael Landeiro, which occurred in Copacabana. The crime sparked an intense manhunt after security camera footage showed the assault committed against the victim, who was mistaken for a thief.

Identification of suspects and arrests

The investigation by the 12th Police Station identified four men involved in the crime: two delivery workers and two security guards. The Duty Court issued temporary arrest warrants for Felipe Eduardo dos Santos Silva and Ailton José da Silva, the men carrying delivery backpacks seen in the footage. Security guards Davi Santos Machado and Jorge Luiz Ricardo Dias are already in custody after turning themselves in to the police.

Sequence of the recorded assault

The beating occurred on August 11, after a security guard questioned Cláudio about the bicycle he was riding, which belonged to his sister. The victim had psychiatric conditions and speech difficulties, making it hard to explain himself. Cláudio was initially approached on Barata Ribeiro Street and then taken to Felipe de Oliveira Street, where he suffered about 30 blows with a bar or club, in addition to punches and kicks, unable to defend himself.

Clandestine operation and responsibility

According to police chief Ângelo Lages, the security guards were operating clandestinely, providing services to local businesses. The police are investigating the civil, administrative, and criminal liability of the business owners who hired these professionals illegally, which could result in the loss of their business licenses and even indictment for homicide if collaboration in the crime is proven.

Medical assistance and cause of death

After the beating, those involved left Cláudio agonizing on the ground and searched his pockets. The Fire Department was called and rushed the victim to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital in Gávea, but he died from traumatic brain injury and internal bleeding.
