US Operation Rescues 163 Missing Children
The action, dubbed Operation Statewide Shield, identified cases of abuse and exploitation across multiple states and countries.
United States authorities announced in late August the rescue of 163 missing children during Operation Statewide Shield, a five-day operation aimed at identifying and disrupting cases of child abuse, exploitation, and trafficking.
How the Operation Was Conducted
The operation was led by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and utilized real-time intelligence combined with field teams to locate victims and immediately refer them to protective services.
Distribution of Rescues in the United States
In Florida, 46 children were found in Tampa Bay, 41 in Miami, 32 in Jacksonville, 21 in Orlando, 12 in Fort Myers, eight in Pensacola, and three in Tallahassee. Searches also extended to Alabama, California, Ohio, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Puerto Rico.
Victims Found Outside the US
In addition to minors located in the United States, the operation identified children in 12 countries, including Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Finland, Ghana, Guatemala, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Spain, and Taiwan.
Children's Situation After Rescue
The minors were placed in safety and began receiving necessary care through protective services and specialized assistance.
Arrests Related to the Case
During the operation, three suspects were arrested: one wanted for sexual crimes against minors and interference with child custody; another accused of an illegal sexual act involving a victim between 12 and 16 years old; and a third detained for interference in a custody case and resisting law enforcement.
Importance of the Initiative
The Florida government described Operation Statewide Shield as the first statewide initiative of its kind and the largest missing child recovery operation ever conducted in the state.
