Polar Cold Wave Hits AMBA and Parts of the Country

This past week brings a polar cold wave that already hit on Saturday and is expected to continue into Sunday, with temperatures below 10°C in 16 districts, including the capital and the Greater Buenos Aires area. The National Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert and recommends precautions for at-risk groups.

What Changes in AMBA's Temperatures

Buenos Aires' minimum on Sunday starts at 3°C, with a peak forecast of 10°C. The sky remains partly cloudy, and winds reach up to 22 km/h. On Saturday, the minimum was 1°C and the maximum only 8°C, while Buenos Aires province also recorded 1°C and 8°C. The trend is for a 5°C increase by Monday morning, with temperatures gradually rising to 20°C by mid-week.

Yellow Alert for Extreme Cold and Health Risks

The SMN warns that extreme cold can be mild to moderate but dangerous for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses. It recommends avoiding prolonged exposure, wearing several layers of light clothing, and keeping homes safely heated. The recommendation also includes avoiding sudden temperature changes and taking special care of those at risk.

Ventilation and Safety in Strong Wind Areas

In addition to the cold, there is a yellow alert for strong winds in the western regions of Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca, and La Rioja, and in northwestern Tucumán. Winds can reach 70 km/h, with gusts up to 100 km/h. The SMN advises removing or securing objects that could be blown away and keeping a distance from doors, windows, poles, and trees. In central Jujuy, the Zonda wind can reach 50 km/h, with gusts of 70 km/h, causing reduced visibility and an increase in temperature.

What to Expect in the Coming Days

Sunday will be the coldest day of the week, with a maximum of only 11°C. Starting Monday, the thermal ascent continues, but temperatures remain anomalous for the season. On Tuesday, the maximum rises to 15°C; on Wednesday, 18°C; on Thursday, 19°C. Friday brings a return to lower temperatures, with a maximum of 14°C. The weekend will be colder again, with maximums of 13°C on Saturday. The weather remains dry, but models indicate the possibility of new rainfall over the weekend.

Practical Recommendations for AMBA Residents

Due to the extreme cold, it is important to maintain adequate ventilation to reduce respiratory particles and the risk of disease transmission. Take advantage of the dry weather for outdoor activities, but always protect your eyes and nose from dust with glasses and a face mask. Avoid lighting fires in Zonda wind areas and keep doors and windows closed to prevent hot dust from entering. If you need to go out, wear several layers of light clothing and keep your home safely heated.
