New ‘Luffy’ beetles described with manga inspiration
Newly created genus features elongated jaws and antennae, reminiscent of the elastic hero

On August 3, 2026, researchers announced the creation of a new beetle genus, named Luffy, in reference to the elastic protagonist of the series One Piece. The name choice reflects the insects' extensive proportions, which resemble the character's ability to stretch its body.
Name and inspiration of the new species
The genus Luffy received this name because its members have exceptionally long and thin jaws, antennae, and maxillary palps, features that the authors compared to Luffy's rubber-like body. The title was not chosen whimsically, but to highlight the morphological similarity.
Identified species and their habitats
To date, two species have been described: Luffy schillhammeri, found in broad-leaved forests in Yunnan Province, China, and Luffy nika, discovered in Louang Namtha, northern Laos. The epithet schillhammeri honors Dr. Harald Schillhammer of the Natural History Museum Vienna for his contributions to the study of rove beetles. The name nika refers to the “Nika” transformation of the character.
Distinctive morphological characteristics
In addition to the elongated structures, Luffy nika displays white bands of hairs on the elytra and much of the body, recalling the white, smoke-wrapped form that Luffy acquires in the Nika transformation. These markings reinforce the visual connection between the insects and the character.
Phylogenetic placement and taxonomic significance
The study, conducted by Fang-Shuo Hu and Alexey Solodovnikov, reviewed all known genera of the Ocypus group and examined groups such as Acupronotes, Apostenolinus, and Staphylinus. The authors identified synapomorphies that define the Eucibdelus lineage, such as dorsal crest teeth on the left mandible and a fully sclerotized upper lip. Although Luffy beetles possess the dorsal crest teeth, their upper lip is not completely sclerotized, combining unique features that place them as a likely sister group to the Eucibdelus lineage. "This genus exhibits a unique combination of characters intermediate between the Eucibdelus lineage and other members of the Ocypus-group," the researchers observed, noting that the discovery fills a gap in the existing classification and offers a new perspective on the evolutionary history of the subtribe Staphylinina.
Scientific outreach and future expectations
The full description of the genus and its species was published in the open-access journal ZooKeys. The authors hope that Luffy's story will help bring science closer to the public, raise awareness of the importance of biological taxonomy, and inspire young people to explore biodiversity with the adventurous spirit associated with the character.
