The Rock in Rio 2026 Mundo stage welcomed Nelly, one of the biggest rap stars of the 2000s, on September 6th. The singer's presence generated immense interest, largely due to a detail that defined his career: the band-aid on his face.

Nelly and the face band-aid

Ever since the release of his Country Grammar album in 2000, Nelly became known for wearing the adhesive bandage in all his appearances. Until recently, the reason was a subject of speculation. In March 2025, the rapper revealed on the Big Boy podcast that the choice was a tribute to City Spud, a member of the St. Lunatics group and a friend who was imprisoned after the album's release.

City Spud and the impact on Nelly's style

City Spud, also a rapper, was arrested after the Country Grammar album was finalized. Nelly wore the band-aid to remember his friend who could not partake in the success celebration. The tribute became a symbol of friendship and solidarity between the two artists.

From the Country Grammar album to global success

Nelly's debut album, Country Grammar, features the hit Ride Wit Me, a collaboration with City Spud. In 2002, the Nellyville album solidified the rapper's career on the international scene. The album cover features Nelly with a black headband and a band-aid on his cheekbone, reinforcing the look that became iconic.

Impact on streetwear

Nelly's style, featuring baggy clothes, the band-aid, and accessories like the Rams jersey, influenced parties and events. In interviews, the rapper pointed out that the bandage became a "costume" that earned him recognition as a star. The effect lives on in the streets, where the band-aid continues to be a symbol of streetwear fashion.

The return to Rock in Rio 2026

On the Mundo stage, Nelly performed songs that marked his journey, such as Dilemma, a collaboration with Kelly Rowland. The music video for Dilemma has accumulated over one billion views on YouTube, where the bandage remains prominently displayed. The return to Rock in Rio reaffirms the importance of the band-aid as an element of identity and tribute throughout his career.
