Mariana Naime Misses Out on Chamber Seat Despite Outpolling Elected Candidates
PL Candidate Received 67,000 Votes, But Proportional Calculation Barred Her Election

Mariana Naime, a candidate for the Liberal Party (PL), received 67,218 votes in the elections for the Chamber of Deputies, a number higher than that of two elected left-wing candidates. Nevertheless, she did not secure a seat and became an alternate.
Why Mariana Naime Missed Out on a Chamber Seat
The outcome stems from the proportional calculation rule that determines the distribution of seats. The method considers the total performance of the party or federation, and not just the individual vote count of each candidate.
How Proportional Calculation Works in Elections
In a proportional election, the total votes obtained by all candidates of a party determine how many seats the party will have. Each seat corresponds to an electoral quotient, which is the division of the total valid votes by the number of available seats. If a party does not reach the quotient, its most voted candidates may remain without a mandate, even if they surpass elected candidates from other parties.
Who Was Elected and Who Became an Alternate
The PL managed to elect three federal deputies: Alberto Fraga, Izalci Lucas, and Thiago Manzoni, who were the party's highest-voted candidates. Mariana Naime was right behind them and became an alternate. Among the elected left-wing candidates, Agnelo Queiroz (PT) and Professor Reginaldo Veras (PV) were elected with 43,542 and 43,179 votes, respectively.
Mariana Naime's Profile and Connection to January 8th
Mariana Naime holds a bachelor's degree in law and is an entrepreneur. She is the wife of Colonel Jorge Eduardo Naime, former head of operations for the Federal District Military Police, who was sentenced to 16 years for omission in the January 8th acts. During the campaign, Mariana took a stance against Supreme Federal Court decisions related to the same episode and received support from Nikolas Ferreira, the most voted federal deputy in history.
Impact of the Election for PL in the DF
With three deputies elected, the PL will have the largest caucus in the Federal District within the Chamber of Deputies. The increase in seats strengthens the party's presence in the federal sphere, while Mariana's absence as a principal member demonstrates the effect of proportional calculation on individual candidacies.
