In the 2026 elections, Luiz Osvaldo Pastore (PL) was elected first alternate to Eduardo Gomes for the Senate representing Tocantins, sparking significant interest in online searches. The 77-year-old businessman, with declared assets of R$ 677.7 million, will stand as the senator's backup for the next eight years.

Who is the elected first alternate

Luiz Osvaldo Pastore, born in São Paulo, began his political career in Espírito Santo and had been affiliated with the MDB since 1986. He was previously elected first alternate to Gerson Camata in 1994, serving in office between 2002 and 2003. In 2014, he returned to the Senate as alternate to Rose de Freitas, occupying the seat during the senator's leaves of absence.

Assets and origin of wealth

The Estadão ranking, based on filings submitted to the TSE, identifies Pastore as the wealthiest candidate in the 2026 elections. The bulk of his fortune lies in investments, financial assets, and equity stakes, including partnerships in at least eight companies within the metallurgical sector. Among the declared assets are R$ 12.9 million in personal items, furniture, and works of art, along with a home valued at R$ 2.9 million.

Declared financial details

In addition to these assets, Pastore reported R$ 145.4 million in loans, R$ 3.35 million in checking accounts, and R$ 256.5 thousand held abroad. His fortune has grown by 49% since 2022, when he declared R$ 453.6 million while running as first alternate on Flávia Arruda's ticket in the Federal District.

Recent moves and ties to the PL

To run in the 2026 election, Pastore left the MDB, transferred his voter registration to Tocantins, and joined the PL, joining Eduardo Gomes's ticket. In November 2025, a private jet belonging to his company Ibrame flew Justice Dias Toffoli and attorney Augusto Arruda Botelho to Lima, Peru, to attend the Copa Libertadores final, although the aircraft is not listed on his asset disclosure.

What it means to be a "professional alternate"

The term "professional alternate" appears in the source's reporting, noting that Pastore has served in the role on multiple occasions, standing ready to step into the senator's seat in the event of a leave of absence or vacancy during the eight-year term.
