China's J-16 conducts joint combat training in Egypt

China's People's Liberation Army Air Force J-16 fighter jets conducted combat training and joint maneuvers with Egyptian forces. The deployment comes amid tensions in the region and places Chinese aviation operating side-by-side with Western-made equipment.

Long-distance deployment to the Middle East

The Chinese air force sent J-16 fighters, as well as YU-20 aerial refueling aircraft, KJ-500 early warning aircraft, and Z-20 helicopters to Egyptian territory. The aircraft flew over six thousand kilometers in nine hours and crossed four countries to reach their destination, according to official reports released by state broadcaster CCTV.

First engagement against Western fighters outside Asia

During the first day of training, the J-16 fighters conducted simulated short- and medium-range aerial combat, in both one-on-one and two-on-two formats, facing French-made Rafale fighters operated by the Egyptian Air Force. The mission represents the first deployment of J-16 fighters outside Asia and the first reported engagement of the aircraft against a cutting-edge Western fighter like the Rafale.

Geopolitical context and regional tensions

The exercises are part of the second edition of the joint aerial training called "Eagles of Civilization". The maneuvers take place against the backdrop of the war between the United States and Iran, while Egypt maintains a cautious position of neutrality and China calls for peace talks and a ceasefire in the region.

Technical capabilities and force projection

The J-16 is a domestically developed twin-engine heavy fighter based on the Russian Su-27 aircraft. Although it lacks radar-stealth capabilities, defense experts consider it one of the most capable fourth-generation fighters in the world. The exercise tested the air force's capabilities in long-range force projection, rapid mobilization, and integrated operations following aerial refueling carried out by YU-20 tankers.
