IPCA Records 0.32% Deflation in August
Official inflation registers largest monthly drop since 2022, driven by electricity and transport
Brazil's Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) recorded a deflation of 0.32% in August, the largest monthly drop since August 2022. The result was released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and has generated significant search interest.
What Caused the IPCA Drop in August
The deflation was led by the Housing group, which fell by 1.87% during the month. The main driver was residential electricity, which dropped by 7.63% following the incorporation of the Itaipu Bonus into August bills. This benefit returns part of the plant's surplus resources to consumers, providing temporary relief on electricity bills.
How Other Groups Contributed to Deflation
In addition to Housing, the Transport, Food and Beverages, and Communication groups also showed negative variations: -0.86% in Transport, -0.34% in Food and Beverages, and -0.09% in Communication. In Transport, the decline was primarily driven by airfares (a decrease of 13.17%) and fuels, with ethanol down -3.95%, diesel -0.80%, and gasoline -0.59%.
What Increases Limited the Decline
Some subgroups registered increases, mitigating the overall deflation. Personal expenses rose by 1.30%, driven by cigarettes (+19.59%). Apparel saw an increase of 0.12%, and household articles rose by 0.64%. In the Housing sector, piped gas grew by 1.74% due to tariff adjustments in Curitiba (10.21%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.80%). Water and sewage rates advanced by 0.11% after a 3.55% adjustment in Salvador.
Impact of Deflation on the Central Bank's Inflation Target
Even with the drop in August, the IPCA accumulated over 12 months stood at 4.22%, still within the tolerance range of the 3% ± 1.5 percentage point target set by the Central Bank. Annual inflation remains below the 4.44% recorded in the previous month.
Outlook for the Coming Months
August data reinforces the deceleration trend in prices, but inflation still shows an accumulated increase. The behavior of groups that registered increases, such as Personal Expenses and Housing, will be decisive in determining whether the downward trend will continue in future IPCA releases.
