On the afternoon of August 10, 2026, a structural fire broke out in district 14, El Poblado, Medellín, near 11th Street and the Lebanese restaurant Creta. A column of black smoke was seen from several points in the neighborhood.

Fire and its location

The fire started at a site where recyclable materials are stored, near 11th Street, next to the Creta restaurant. The dense black smoke spread quickly, making the situation visible in various parts of the area. The black smoke rose continuously, allowing the emergency to be perceived from a distance.

Firefighters' response

According to Mayor Federico Gutiérrez, initially two teams from the Medellín Official Fire Department were dispatched to the site. Minutes later, the number of teams increased to four, which managed to control the blaze. Gutiérrez first stated that there were no injured persons, but minutes later confirmed two victims with minor injuries.

Victims and damages

The mayor's first statement reported that there were no injured, but the subsequent report confirmed two people with minor injuries. He also indicated that the blaze caused impacts on a neighboring building, without detailing the nature of those damages.

History of fires in recyclable material depots

Fires at sites storing recyclable material have been recorded before. In July of this year, a fire in Bello, also started in a recycling depot, affected a residence and caused the death of two animals.

Current situation on site

Although the fire has been extinguished, fire units remain on site conducting control operations and checking the condition of nearby structures. So far, authorities have not disclosed the cause of the fire nor the extent of the damages.
