Man attempts to jump STF fence, backpack investigated as possible bomb

On the night of October 1st, a 28-year-old man attempted to climb the fence protecting the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and, upon being approached, threw a backpack onto a bus stop in Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Square), in Brasília. The incident triggered Operation Petardo, involving the bomb squad of the Federal District Military Police (PMDF) and the Judicial Police.

What prompted the intervention of security forces

The STF's own monitoring system identified the climbing attempt and the individual's presence near the bus stop. Immediately, the PMDF was called and dispatched teams to the scene to contain the situation and ascertain the backpack's contents.

How the suspect was approached

Around 7:50 PM, officers approached the man, who resisted and made demanding statements, according to police information. The suspect was was arrested in flagrante delicto and taken to a police vehicle for assessment.

Backpack verification procedures

Operation Petardo followed protocols for inspecting suspicious devices. Bomb squad teams analyzed the object and, after inspection, identified only personal items, such as a toothbrush and toothpaste. No explosives were found. Explosives detection dogs were also used in the verification.

Immediate impact on the STF area

During the operation, the perimeter of Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Square) was restricted, and traffic was halted until the procedures were completed. The location remained under the surveillance of security forces until 9:10 PM, when the Military Police reported that the bomb squad was still on site to finalize the assessment.

Current status of the suspect

The man remains detained in a Military Police vehicle while authorities process the incident. The PMDF awaits the arrival of the Fire Department to provide assistance and assess the need for medical interventions, including the possibility of drug or medication use.
