George Russell secures pole position at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Driver George Russell claimed pole position for the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a competitive qualifying session on the streets of Baku. The Briton secured the top spot on the starting grid, beating Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri.

The championship leader's crash

The session featured a dramatic moment when championship leader Kimi Antonelli hit the wall at turn 1 during the first elimination session. The impact caused terminal damage to the suspension of his Mercedes car, eliminating the young Italian early and leaving him in sixteenth position for the start.

George Russell's performance

With his teammate out, George Russell took center stage and improved his time on every lap in Q3. The Briton clocked a time of 1m 42.526s, establishing a comfortable margin over his rivals and securing pole position at the Baku circuit.

The battle at the top of the grid

Charles Leclerc secured second place for Ferrari, finishing just ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri. Fourth place went to Red Bull's Isack Hadjar, followed by Lando Norris in fifth, who struggled with tire locking on his final flying lap.

Eliminations and grid penalties

Besides Antonelli, other drivers faced difficulties in the session, including both Audi cars with Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg eliminated in the first phase. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were also penalized with power unit component changes, which will place them at the back of the grid for the race.
