The National Day of Zumbi and Black Awareness was made an official national holiday and, in 2026, it will fall on a Friday (November 20). The position of the date on the calendar allows Monday-to-Friday workers to finish their workday on Thursday and enjoy three consecutive days of rest.

November 2026 features three national holidays, according to MGI Ordinance No. 11,460/2025: All Souls' Day on November 2 (Monday), Black Awareness Day on November 20 (Friday), and Republic Proclamation Day on November 15, which falls on a Sunday and does not generate extra time off.
How the three-day long weekend works
For those who work Monday through Friday, the sequence begins after the end of the shift on November 19 (Thursday). The holiday takes place on November 20, followed by the weekend of November 21 and 22, returning to work only on November 23 (Monday). This combination creates a period of three free calendar days.
Who is entitled to time off or compensation
Working on holidays must be paid at double time, according to the consolidated understanding of the Labor Court, or it can be compensated with another day of rest. Collective bargaining agreements and internal agreements may establish specific rules for each professional category.
Exceptions: essential services and shift work
Hospitals, transportation, security, hotels, restaurants, and other essential activities may continue operating on Friday. Professionals who work in shifts or for companies authorized to operate may be called upon to work, and must receive the remuneration or compensation provided for by law.
Impacts on tourism and commerce
The Friday, Saturday, and Sunday sequence usually stimulates short trips, visits to family members, and increased demand in hotels, inns, restaurants, and transportation terminals. Traffic on highways and airports tends to increase in the days leading up to the holiday.
