The bombings began at noon Eastern Time on Tuesday. According to President Donald Trump, the attacks were a direct retaliation to Iran’s attempt to lay naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz and to the launch of eight missiles at a US military base in Jordan, all of which were intercepted. Trump said US forces destroyed radar installations that Iran was trying to rebuild. Iranian media reported explosions on Qeshm Island and in the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Chabahar.

President Donald Trump warned that if Iran responds, it will be hit even harder, mentioning that a larger attack is being prepared behind the scenes. Trump declared that, in case of another reaction, the country could be completely destroyed. Conversely, Iranian military sources and state news agencies said Tehran’s response would be far greater and that US bases and interests in the region would come under Iranian fire. Iran’s Parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, warned that the country will respond militarily if the American pressure intensifies, threatening to halt oil exports in the Persian Gulf.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic choke point through which about one‑fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. Recently, two tankers were attacked on the route, sparking international concerns about energy supplies. Amid the rising hostilities, US embassies in Qatar and Jerusalem issued security alerts. The diplomatic missions advised American citizens in the region to stay on high alert and to prepare for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions.

Economic pressure strategy and sanctions against Iran

During the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent argued that the economic pressure campaign against Iran is working because it is backed by military strikes and a naval blockade. Bessent explained that the US Treasury is using new authorities to intensify sanctions on the financial, aviation and maritime sectors, aiming to economically strangle the Iranian regime. The US Central Command reported that American forces have already redirected 84 commercial vessels and disabled three others to ensure compliance with the blockade against Iran.
