Researchers have identified an enzyme that could act as a natural defense against the worsening of fatty liver disease, a condition affecting approximately 100 million Americans. The protein, known as UBE2N, plays a key role in clearing liver cells by removing damaged mitochondria and facilitating the breakdown of fats.

How UBE2N works in the liver

The UBE2N enzyme helps liver cells eliminate compromised organelles, a process that prevents the accumulation of cellular damage. By promoting fat breakdown, the protein helps reduce inflammation and scarring—factors associated with the advanced stage of the disease, known as MASH.

Implications for the treatment of fatty liver disease

By enhancing the liver's ability to remove defective mitochondria and metabolize lipids, UBE2N can reduce the inflammation, fibrosis, and cellular damage that characterize progression to MASH. This discovery paves the way for research exploring strategies to boost the enzyme's activity as a means to halt the progression of the disease.
