Rio voters must check new polling places before election
Over 600,000 voters have had their polling places changed, and TRE-RJ will not send individual notices
On the eve of this Sunday's (4) election, the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) announced that approximately 670,000 voters will have to go to a different address than the one listed in their previous inquiries.
Why the polling stations were relocated
The court explained that the changes were made due to security, accessibility, establishment closures, or structural issues. The number of modified locations rose from 66, announced in early August, to 72 last week, and eventually reached 277 polling stations across 20 municipalities.
How many voters are affected
According to TRE-RJ, around 202,000 voters were impacted by the first round of transfers, which relied on intelligence from the Military, Civil, and Federal Police, the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the Judiciary. A subsequent assessment raised the total number of affected voters to approximately 5% of the state's electorate, corresponding to 670,000 people.
How to check the new address
The Electoral Justice system offers three channels for inquiries: the TRE-RJ website, the e-Título app, and telephone/WhatsApp at (21) 3436-9000. In the app, simply access the "Onde votar" (Where to vote) option to check the venue name, full address, and polling station number. The TSE website also allows searches using CPF or voter registration number, date of birth, and mother's name.
What to check during the inquiry
The court advises voters to check both the venue name and address, rather than just the polling station number, as the old numbering may be kept at a different building. In some cases, a polling station may be split across more than one location.
Possibility of further changes
TRE-RJ warns that changes to polling locations can still occur up until election day, including due to unforeseen circumstances. Therefore, a final check before voting is highly recommended.
Recommended procedure
Voters should access one of the official channels, confirm the displayed address, and, if necessary, use the route option in their mobile map app to reach the new polling station. The address displayed in the e-Título app will be the one considered for the 2026 election.
