Polling stations in Rio de Janeiro will receive the reinforcement of military troops during the electoral process. The measure was made possible after the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) authorized the deployment of federal forces to operate in the state for the 2026 Elections.

The president of the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ), Judge Claudio de Mello Tavares, commented on the decision. According to the authority, the use of federal forces in the election represents an important reinforcement.

The role of the Electoral Justice and the deployment of federal forces

Sending military troops to work in elections is a procedure provided for in Brazilian legislation. This mechanism is activated to ensure that the right to vote is exercised fully. Within the organizational structure of elections, different bodies perform specific roles:

  • Superior Electoral Court (TSE): As the highest body of Electoral Justice in the country, the TSE is responsible for reviewing and authorizing federal force requests sent by the states.
  • Regional Electoral Courts (TREs): Responsible for local organization, the courts of each state assess the need for external support and forward formal requests to the higher court.
  • Federal Forces: The troops operate collaboratively with local security forces, focusing on preserving public order and protecting polling stations.

How security works in the Brazilian electoral process

Security during voting is a fundamental aspect for maintaining democratic normalcy. Planning involves coordination between Electoral Justice, state public security agencies, and, when necessary, the Armed Forces. The main goal is to ensure that voters and election staff can move and perform their duties without external interference.

The request for federal troops is based on technical criteria and local risk assessments. Once approved by the TSE, the military operation is coordinated together with the guidelines of the Electoral Justice of each locality, guaranteeing strict compliance with the country's legal norms.
