On August 2, 2027, the Moon will align perfectly between the Sun and Earth, darkening the sky in the Eastern Hemisphere. The path of totality will begin in the Eastern Atlantic, cross the Strait of Gibraltar, and peak in Egypt, passing through countries such as Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Somalia.
Duration and characteristics of the total phase
NASA estimates that the total phase of the eclipse will last 6 minutes and 22 seconds, with a path of totality about 258 kilometers wide. The phenomenon will occur while the Moon is at perigee, its closest point to Earth, and the Sun appears slightly smaller in the sky, favoring complete coverage.
Observation sites and astronomical tourism
Since the path of totality is narrow, only specific regions will be able to see the full eclipse. The Italian island of Lampedusa, the largest of the Pelagie archipelago, has already seen hotels fully booked for the date, reflecting the demand from travelers interested in astrotourism. The search for flights and accommodation began nearly a year in advance and exceeded forecasts.
What is seen during totality
During totality, the Sun is completely obscured, allowing for the observation of the solar corona, the bright outer layer that is normally outshone by the star's intense light. This view is only possible within the narrow path where the eclipse is total.
Why Brazil will not observe the eclipse
Brazil lies outside the path of totality for 2027, meaning the phenomenon will be partial or completely invisible in the country. Therefore, Brazilian interest is turning toward international destinations where the total shadow will be experienced.
