Parents Demand City Action After Rockfalls and Flooding at Municipal School
Parents of students from Enedina Lourenço Vieira Municipal School gathered this Monday (14) to protest against the lack of maintenance and the risk of collapse of an embankment located behind the unit, in Jardim Planalto, Piracicaba (SP). The mobilization occurred after heavy rains caused rockfalls and flooding at the school.
Risk of Collapse and Rockfalls
Parents and guardians state that the slope has been deteriorating, with half-ton rocks already falling. The main concern is the safety of the children, who could suffer injuries if the embankment collapses.
Flooding and Structural Problems
In addition to the risk of collapse, the school experiences flooding caused by an irregular grate in the plumbing, sewage system intrusion, and the presence of scorpions and cockroaches. These problems have led some parents to suspend sending their children to school.
Meeting with City Hall and Promise of Repairs
Following the protests, the city hall held a meeting with the parents. The Municipal Secretary of Education, Juliana Vicentin, reported that an analysis with the Department of Public Works and Civil Defense is underway. The city hall assured that renovation teams already working at the unit would be reassigned to address immediate risk areas, with completion expected within two months.
Student Relocation and Safety Priority
To protect students, approximately 100 students attending classrooms near the risk area will be transferred to another school block. The priority, according to the secretary, is to ensure the children's safety and reassure parents.
Context of Intense Rainfall in Piracicaba
The heavy rains that hit the city recorded 78.7 mm on September 10, exceeding the historical monthly average of 60.2 mm. The Piracicaba River surpassed 4.2 m, reaching an emergency state due to the risk of overflowing in the Rua do Porto region. Civil Defense advises the population to avoid areas near the banks and to monitor official communications.
Emergency Measures and Highway Interdiction
A water main belonging to the Municipal Water and Sewage Service (Semae) ruptured, causing the partial interdiction of a section of the Luiz de Queiroz Highway (SP-304). Muddy water flooded the highway, blocking one lane in the direction of Piracicaba. Semae teams were called to carry out repairs.
